Guide answers with Fill-in Cards

Give people a sentence to complete so their answers are clear and easy to read together.

A Fill-in Card gives people part of a sentence and asks them to complete the missing pieces.

Instead of facing an empty card, they see exactly what kind of answer you need. Stormz joins their answers into one complete sentence on the board.

Why use a Fill-in Card?

Suppose you ask, “What do you need from this team?”

On an empty card, someone might write only “time.” Other people may not know whether they need more time, protected time, or time with a colleague.

A Fill-in Card can ask:

I need [need] from the team because [reason].

A completed card might say:

I need earlier feedback from the team because I want time to improve the first draft.

The sentence helps people give enough detail. It also gives every answer the same shape, so the group can read and compare the cards more easily.

Use a Fill-in Card when people need a little help to start, or when you want every answer to include the same information. Use a normal Sticky when you want completely open answers.

Create the missing pieces

Write normal text, then put each missing piece inside square brackets.

Let people type an answer

Use a short name inside the brackets:

I would improve [thing] because [reason].

Participants will type their own answer for thing and reason.

Give people a choice

Add the choices after the name. Separate them with a vertical line:

Today I feel [mood: Ready | Curious | Unsure] because [reason].

Participants will choose Ready, Curious, or Unsure, then type their reason.

Each gap needs a different name. Every gap must be completed before the card can be added.

Set up Fill-in Cards

  1. Open Manage Cards in the Facilitator Bar.
  2. If you cannot see it, switch the Facilitator Bar to Expert mode.
  3. Make sure Allow Card Creation is on.
  4. Under Which types of cards can be created, select Fill-in Card.
  5. In Fill in the gap, write your sentence and its gaps.
  6. If the activity allows several card types, choose which type the main Add button should create.
  7. Select Apply.

Keep the sentence short. Participants should understand it without needing another explanation.

What participants do

  1. Select the Add button.
  2. Choose Fill-in Card if the activity offers more than one card type.
  3. Type an answer in each text gap and make any required choices.
  4. Add the card.

Stormz shows the completed sentence on the board. If participants are allowed to edit their cards, they can change their answers later.

Change the sentence later

Changing the Fill-in Card sentence affects new cards only.

Existing cards keep the sentence that was used when they were created. This means you can still read and edit old answers after changing the activity for the next group.

Useful examples

Check how people feel

Right now I feel [mood: Ready | Curious | Unsure] because [reason].

This gives you a quick feeling from the room and enough detail to understand it.

Turn ideas into actions

I will [action] by [date] and I need [support].

This asks for an action, a date, and the help needed to make it happen.

Run a playful introduction

If I were an animal, I would be [animal] because [reason].

This gives everyone the same easy starting point while leaving room for personal answers. See the If I Were an Animal activity for a complete example.

Use the answer to create an image

A completed Fill-in Card is also useful as an image prompt. For example:

If I were an animal, I would be a [color] [animal] wearing [outfit].

If you turn on image generation, Stormz can use the completed sentence to create an image for each card.
